This is a thriller in the "ordinary person gets pulled into a sinister conspiracy" vein. Avery Keene, clerk to a Supreme Court judge, is stunned to learn that her boss is in a coma, and he's left paperwork naming her as his legal guardian. They're not close (or even friends, really), and she can't understand why he chose her over his estranged son. Abrams also writes romance as Selena Montgomery. Her romances usually have a touch of mystery/thriller, and this thriller has a touch of romance with the judge's son Jared, though it takes a back seat to the conspiracy story. One sadly realistic touch: as soon as the news gets out about Avery being the judge's guardian, she's mobbed by reporters asking if she's sleeping with him. When she's later spotted with Jared, she's accused of sleeping with both. There are some familiar tropes: Avery is a skilled puzzle solver and chess player, with a photographic memory. She has a troubled family life. The conspiracy itself, however, was innovative and ambitious. Avery and Jared have to find a way to save both their family members while thwarting a plot that goes to the highest levels of government. 52 Book Club Challenge: About a conspiracy.
