Modesty Blaise, by Peter O'Donnell.

Modesty Blaise is the first book in Peter O'Donnell's series about a former crime queen turned secret agent. In this one, Modesty and has to protect a priceless shipment of diamonds that's been targeted by ruthless criminals.

Spy novels from the 1960s inevitably draw comparisons to James Bond. Like Bond, Modesty has a mysterious past, no family, and a wide variety of skills, both combat-related and "sophisticated." Unlike him, Modesty has compassion and a normal range of human emotions. In fact, she has a habit of breaking down in tears at the end of an adventure.

Modesty's right-hand man and best friend is Willie Garvin. He practically worships her - and even in 1965, he's not intimidated by letting a woman take charge. On the other hand, Modesty's lover wants to be involved in the job, and Modesty vetoes the idea because he's too protective.

Trigger warning for violence. Also, Modesty's backstory includes being raped twice, a fact which Willie inexplicably discloses to Modesty's lover without her knowledge or consent.

Popsugar Reading Challenge: Platonic friendship between a man and woman.
