The Long Game, by Rachel Reid. This is book 6 in Rachel Reid's Game Changer series, and we get back to the most entertaining couple, Shane and Ilya from Heated Rivalry. Ilya is in every book in the series, and his sarcastic humor and bad-boy attitude are always a delight. Now that their enemies-with-benefits arrangement has blossomed into love, they're facing new conflicts. Shane is terrified of coming out, and is trying to be perfect. Ilya is feeling isolated after moving to be near Shane, and starting to suspect that he shares his late mother's tendency toward depression. Ilya needs to learn to accept help, and Shane needs to learn to compromise. As always, we get glimpses of the couples from the other books in the series. The timeline overlaps with Role Model, and we see some of the same events from Ilya's point of view, including a life-threatening emergency. While Scott in Game Changer and Troy in Role Model got to pick their triumphant moments for coming out, things for Shane and Ilya don't go quite according to plan. As with all romance, we get a happy ending, but there are multiple reminders of the homophobia they're dealing with in the world of professional sports. And, as always, there's a lot of sex, including a memorable scene in Shane's trophy room.
