Popsugar Reading Challenge category: An #OwnVoices science fiction or fantasy book Book: So Long Been Dreaming: Postcolonial Science Fiction & Fantasy, edited by Nalo Hopkinson & Uppinder Mehan This is a short story anthology that reimagines colonialism, oppression, and the immigrant experience, as well as classic SF/F tropes like first contact. Authors are African, Asian, Native, and diaspora, and include Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu, Hiromi Goto, and Vanada Singh, among others. My favorite story was "The Blue Road" by Wayde Compton, an allegory wherein all immigrants must carry and look into a large a mirror at all times, and learn to get through life walking backwards. Another interesting story was from the point of view of deaf aliens being colonized by humans, and an alien mother tried to weigh out the pros and cons of letting her daughter be surgically altered to allow her to hear and speak.
