Book: The Moment of Change: An Anthology of Feminist Speculative Poetry, Edited by Rose Lemberg

Poetry, feminism, and science fiction/fantasy: three of my favorite things. This book has some familiar names, like Ursula K. LeGuin and Catherynne M. Valente, and many that were new to me. There were authors from diverse countries, ethnicities, sexual orientations and gender identities. The poems themselves included science fiction, fantasy and mythology. Several were feminist reimaginings of fairy tales. My favorite piece was probably "Owling" by Sara Amis, about a magician who kept trying to create a woman for a "helpmeet," but they kept turning into birds instead.

"Her eyes were yellow and round and did not blink.
I am sure I made them soft and melting.
She stared when I answered her questions, as if she were not
impressed."

I'm not sure that I'd call Samantha Henderson's poem "Berry Cobbler" speculative - but it has an impressive response to domestic violence, plus a cobbler recipe that sounds fantastic.
