Book: The Nickel Boys, by Colson Whitehead The other Whitehead books I've read, The Intuitionist and The Underground Railroad, ventured into the surreal. The Nickel Boys stays firmly grounded in reality, based on the true - and utterly harrowing - story of an abusive "reform school" with a secret graveyard. The story follows Elwood, a teenager who gets sent to Nickel Academy in the 1960's for an innocent mistake. Chapters alternate between his time at the school and life as an adult. I knew this book would break my heart, but there's one final twist in the epilogue that breaks it all over again. Powerful and disturbing book.
