Popsugar Reading Challenge category: A book with cutlery on the cover or in the title Book: Skirt Steak: Women Chefs on Standing the Heat and Staying in the Kitchen, by Charlotte Drummond Food writer Charlotte Drummond interviewed 73 women chefs on the challenges and rewards of being a chef (and in some cases, restaurant owner as well). The book got off to a slow start, with hair-splitting over what qualifies as a chef and what education or experience they need. I also found the writing style overly folksy, veering into irrelevant anecdotes from Drummond's life. The book got going when the chefs talked frankly about the long hours at a physically demanding job, the challenge of combining it with a relationship or parenting, and the "boys club" mentality they sometimes encountered. Some were harassed on the job, some simply found their work overlooked or devalued. But it was clear they all loved the job itself. And Drummond's food descriptions were spectacular.
