Popsugar Reading Challenge category: A book being made into a movie or TV show in 2022
Book: The Battle of the Labyrinth, by Rick Riordan I figure that any Percy Jackson book qualifies for this category, since it's becoming a TV show. Seems weird to start reviewing a series in the middle, but I read the first 3 books last year. If you're new to the series, by all means, start with The Lightning Thief, which sets up the world we're in: adolescent Percy is secretly the son of the Greek god Poseidon, and spends his summers at Camp Half-Blood, with numerous other children of Greek deities, including his friend Annabeth, a daughter of Athena. The titan Kronos is plotting his return to power, which will mean disaster if he succeeds. Riordan clearly loves Greek mythology, not just the well-known stories, but also lesser-known characters like the Hundred-Handed One. In this installment, we get the inventor Daedalus, a riddle-spouting sphinx, and a rather grouchy Hera. We also get bigger roles for Percy's cyclops half-brother Tyson, and for the satyr Grover (my favorite character), who finally finishes his quest for the missing god Pan. And we get the mysterious mortal, Rachel Elizabeth Dare. One other thing that impresses me about Riordan: he can write a battle scene with a LOT going on, without bogging down or making it hard to keep track of what's happening. A lot of this book is setup for the final installment, but there's plenty to keep busy with in this one.
