Book: Skate the Thief, by Jeff Ayers This is a well-told fantasy about a young ruffian caught between the thieves' syndicate that keeps her alive, and the mysterious wizard who's offered her something better. Skate breaks into a home to rob it, but the owner turns out to be a powerful wizard. He offers to let her stay, in exchange for "borrowing" books from other wizards for him to read. The thieves are three-dimensional characters, and the wizard turns out to have secrets of his own. A particularly delightful character is Rattle, a magical creature described as a giant eyeball with bat wings and 8 legs. Like the magic carpet in Disney's Aladdin, Rattle manages to convey a lot of personality without ever speaking. The ending ties up the main plot, while setting up the next book. Which, I'm told, will be out next year.
